Adding permissions to pages & content blocks using Content Groups
Content Groups allow Learning & Instructional Designers to control which content is visible to which cohorts of Learners.
To learn more about Cohorts, read the Using cohorts article.
For example, you may have organised your Learners in 3 separate cohorts:
  1. Cohort A for high-performing Learners.
  2. Cohort B for regular Learners.
  3. Cohort C for low-performing Learners.
Using Content Groups you can hide or show specific content based on the cohort, such as re-enforcing notions for cohorts C or providing shortcuts to cohort A to bypass some content they know well, or offering different levels of difficulty in assignments base don who is taking them.

Some Xen.Ed customers have even used the Cohorts & Content Groups to invite parents of school students, so they could access important aspects of the learning materials for support at home, without accessing the entire classes.

The possibilities are endless.

How to access & use Content Groups

Please note: Since this feature relies on linking Content Groups to Cohorts, the available options will differ whether cohorts already exist in a course or not. This tutorial assumes that your course does not already have cohorts. You may skip some of the cohort related steps if needed.
  1. From any course, navigate to People & Cohorts in the course's toolbar.
  2. To create a new group, click "+ New content group" and enter the name you will want to use. this is for internal use only and will not be seen by Learners.
  3. Next, switch over to the Learning portal's Instructor View, by activating the toggle in the course header.
  4. Locate the "Cohorts" tab.
  5. Check the "Enable Cohorts" checkbox.
  6. Click the "Add Cohort" button.
  7. Enter the name of the new cohort; by default, learners are assigned manually to a cohort using the CSV upload function, but you can change this to be an automatic distribution instead where students are distributed evenly as they enrol or are enrolled.
  8. Select the Content Group you wish to associate the Cohort with from the dropdown.
  9. Save.

Adding group permissions to a course content

  1. From the Authoring Tool, navigate to any page or content block you wish to add group permissions to.
  2. On the relevant page or content block, access the Visibility Settings by clicking the "Settings" icon (gears).
  3. To change the visibility settings, select the type of group you want to give access to.
  4. Save & Publish.
