Exporting and Importing Courses
Exporting and importing course content is useful if you want to back up a course, preserve its state during development, or transfer it between different Xen sites.

There are several reasons you might want to export your course. For example:
  • To save your work.
  • To edit the XML in your course directly.
  • To create a backup copy of your course, which you can import if you want to revert
  • the course back to a previous state.
  • To share with the team members of another course.
  • To create a copy of your course that you can later import into another course instance and customise.
When you export a course in Xen, the system generates a .tar.gz file containing the following:
Course Content: All Sections, Subsections, and Units.
        Course Structure.
        Individual Problems.
        Pages.
        Course Assets.
        Course Settings.

The following data is not exported:
        User Data.
        Course Team Data.
        Discussion Data.
        Certificates.
        Prerequisite Course Subsection Settings.

To export or import your course, follow these steps within the Authoring Tool:

Exporting Your Course

  1. Open the Authoring Tool and select the course you want to export.
  2. Click on the Tools drop-down menu and choose Export.
  3. On the export page, review the list of components that will and will not be exported.
  4. Click the Export Course Content button. A .tar.gz file will be downloaded, representing your course content.
  5. Rename the file if needed, but ensure the .tar.gz extension remains intact. Store it safely.

Importing Your Course

  1. Navigate to the Authoring Tool for the course you want to import content into.
  2. From the Settings drop-down menu, select Import.
  3. Click the Choose a File to Import button and locate the .tar.gz file that you previously exported.
  4. Important: Importing will overwrite the current course with the content of the file, so ensure you want to replace it.
  5. After confirming, Xen will begin the import process, displaying progress until completion. Depending on the size, this may take a few moments.

Duplicating a Course

You can also use the import-export process to duplicate courses. Export the course you want to duplicate, and then import it into a new or existing course. This allows you to reuse content across different courses or create backups of your work.
