Interactive learning materials, such as quizzes and games, foster active participation and align with educational engagement principles by motivating students through opportunities for collaboration and the ability to choose how they engage with the content. These materials support learning by turning passive study into active exploration.
When teaching in person, we naturally pause at specific points to ask formative comprehension questions, prompt reflection, let learners work individually, or otherwise invite interaction with ideas or processes.
In online, hybrid, or other self-paced digital modes, H5P can help you provide similar interactivity at the moment of interactive need.

What is H5P?
H5P (HTML5 Package) is an open-source framework for creating Open Educational Resources (OER) supporting interactions, multimedia content, and designed to enhance accessibility.
H5P allows Educators to:
- Easily create interactive study materials and activities for their learners.
- Distribute their creations across supported LMS.
- Clone and adapt content for reuse purposes.
- Support accessibility.
- Support languages.
H5P can transform static content into interactive learning experiences for your students, increasing engagement whilst targeting different types of learners and delivery modes.
How to use H5P?
H5P comes in 2 parts:
- The H5P Editor (Lumi)
- The H5P Host (Xen)
The H5P Editor (Lumi)
The H5P Editor is a tool that lets anyone create H5P content without prior knowledge of HTML or programming. Its interface consists of forms and step-by-step wizards that allow you to create, edit and share H5Ps easily.
The H5P editor is the main interface where you can access and manage all the interactive content types available from H5P.
Lumi is a free desktop app version of the H5P Editor. It can be downloaded from https://lumi.education/en/lumi-h5p-offline-desktop-editor.
Once downloaded, you can open the H5P editor in Lumi and create a new H5P.
If you do not have content types installed, you can get them by clicking the "Get" button.
The H5P Host (Xen)
The H5P Host is the platform which serves the H5P content to your learners tool, such as a LMS.
Xen is a fully compliant host and will playback any compatible H5P content, with support capabilities such as tracking of progress, resume from location, grading, etc.
Once you have produced an interactive content the H5P Editor (Lumi), you can export it as a .h5p file on your machine.
This file can then be uploaded to Xen, using a H5P (hosted) component block in a page; you will also be able to configure some display and scoring options.
