What are the browser and computer requirements for Xen?

Xen is a web application that will work with most modern browsers and devices,

For best performance, Xen should be used on the most current or previous major releases of Chrome, Firefox, Edge, or Safari. Xen is built using modern web standards and can run on Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, Android, or any device with a modern web browser.

System Requirements

  • Xen requires an operating system that can support the latest compatible web browsers.
  • It is important to keep your system updated with the latest security patches and operating system upgrades.

Supported Browsers (October 2024)

Xen supports the current and previous major releases of:
  • Chrome 128 | 129
  • Firefox 130 | 131 (Extended Release versions not supported)
  • Edge 126 | 127
  • Safari 17 | 18 (Mac only)

Browser Configuration

Always ensure that you are using the most up-to-date version of your preferred browser. Most browsers will notify you if there is an update available. Additionally, Cookies and JavaScript must be enabled for Xen to function properly.

Known Browser Behaviours

Some browsers may display a warning if they do not meet the minimum system requirements. If you see a message stating that your browser is out of date, try clearing your browser’s cache and cookies, then log back into Xen.
  • Extended Releases: Some organisations may use Extended Release versions of browsers like Chrome ESR or Firefox ESR. However, Firefox ESR can become outdated quickly due to less frequent updates. Ensure you're using the latest full versions for the best experience.
  • Recording Media: Safari and Firefox may not fully support recording features within H5P. Use Chrome or Edge for full media recording functionality.

Browser Privacy Settings

Xen ensures secure access to content and tools. However, some browsers may block certain insecure content (e.g., URLs starting with <http://).> For a seamless experience, ensure all your content is secure (<https://).> In browsers like Chrome and Firefox, you may receive warnings for insecure content. If necessary, you can override browser security settings to access the required content.

Security Features

  • Chrome and Firefox verify that web content is transmitted securely. If insecure content is detected, these browsers display warnings. You can view details by clicking the security symbols in the browser's address bar.
  • Chrome Media Permissions: When using features like the camera or microphone in Xen, Chrome will prompt you to allow access. To ensure a smooth experience, always accept media permissions when prompted.

Computer Specifications

For optimal performance, access Xen on a computer that supports the latest browser versions. It’s recommended to use a device that is no older than five years and has at least 1GB of RAM.

Internet Speed

Xen is designed to perform well even in low bandwidth environments. However, it is recommended to have a minimum internet speed of 512 kbps for a smooth experience.

Mobile Devices

Xen is optimised for desktop displays but it can be accessed on mobile devices using a mobile browser. For the best experience, use modern browsers such as Chrome on Android or Safari on iOS.

Video (hosted)

On iOS, the streaming video player provided with the "Video (hosted)" component currently supports Safari 13.4 and above.
